Who is responsible for arranging a funeral?
The executor or next of kin of the deceased (The Applicant ) is normally responsible for arranging a funeral. The Funeral Director is then responsible for making the arrangements on behalf of the applicant. Family can participate in making the booking with the venue and wake or arrange flowers.
Does the funeral need to be within a specific time frame after death?
There is not a specific time frame to respect. But normally the funeral is done one week after the passing of the person. This can vary depending on cultural or religious beliefs, or if the coroner is involved. The time frame may also be longer if family is waiting for relatives to arrive from interstate or overseas.
How do I get a Death Certificate?
The death certificate information is electronically lodged by the Funeral Director the day after the cremation or burial. The original death certificate normally takes 2 week to arrive at the residence or postal address of the family.
Why do we need an Obituary Notice?
An obituary notice or funeral notice is helpful when you want to invite everyone that knew your loved one to the funeral service. Also a copy of the funeral notice can be found online and on our website. This makes searching for the funeral information via internet quite easy. Very often legal offices (Lawyers or Public Trustee) read the obituary to see if one of their clients has passed away.
What is included in an Obituary Notice?
There are two types of notices, a funeral notice and death notice. Funeral notices include the surname, name and age of the deceased. Also family and relatives names, as well as funeral service and burial details like location, day and time. A death notice includes the surname, name and age of the deceased, as well as family and relatives names, but no information about the funeral service.
What is the difference between a coffin and a casket?
The different between a coffin and casket is the shape. Traditional coffins have a body shape, large at shoulders and narrow towards the feet. The lid is one piece. Caskets have a rectangle shape and the lid can be one or two pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions about Burials
What do I plan first, the coffin or the burial plot?
The coffin is chosen first then the burial plot. The external dimensions of the coffin will be sent to the cemetery office. The cemetery staff will dig the grave large enough for the coffin to fit. If the coffin needs to be placed in a vault, the cemetery staff will check if the coffin will fit. If not the coffin needs to be changed.
What are my options for a burial funeral?
The most common options are service at the Chapel of the Cemetery and burial in the cemetery grounds, or Funeral Mass in a Church and burial in the Cemetery chosen. Graveside Services are less common, they are normally for private gatherings. More information about burial funeral services can be found here.
Do I own a grave plot forever?
Yes, at this stage (2021) in Queensland the ownership of the plot is forever.
What happens if the plot is owned by the deceased?
If the plot is owned by the deceased, the family member that makes the funeral arrangements (the executor or next of kin) is the new owner of the plot.
