A Green Burial (also know as a Natural Burial or Eco Burial) is a funeral service that seeks to make as little impact upon the environment as possible. Choosing the option to have a natural or eco burial is a personal choice that is becoming more common.
A natural or eco burial involves placing the deceased in the ground in a way that allows the body to decompose in a natural way. Decomposition is not inhibited by chemical preservatives or an obstructive coffin.
This burial method starts with the body preparation, where the mortician uses no embalming fluid or non-formaldehyde based formula. The deceased is dressed in biodegradable clothing or a shroud made of cotton. The coffin or casket is made of natural wood, bamboo, wicker or banana leaf, the lining of the coffin is made of natural cotton. The grave might be marked with a tree or any natural component.
Cemeteries that offer Natural or Eco Burials include Alberton Cemetery and Eco Memorial Park. Both are located 50 minutes south of Brisbane.
The service for your loved one can be held at the Chapel or Church of your choice. At the conclusion of the service, family and mourners will follow the hearse to the graveside for the natural burial.
